Non-AA self-help groups

SMART recovery

This organisation offers what they call an alternative to AA, offering face-to-face and online help.

They have a 4-point program:

  • Enhancing and Maintaining Motivation to Abstain
  • Coping with Urges
  • Problem Solving: Managing Thoughts, Feelings and Behaviour
  • Lifestyle Balance: Balancing Momentary and Enduring Satisfactions

I don't know much about them yet, but they look like they're using a sensible approach. If you use them for help or advice, let me know what you think.

Online communities

Any online community is only as good as the people contributing or moderating it, so I'm loathe to give recommendations, as any dangerous advice could pop up there at any time. Also notice that many sites providing a forum are selling services and/or products that may or may not be reputable. But with those caveats, try the message boards and forums at Bright Eye counselling or My Way Out.

If you know of any good online support forums, I'd love to hear from you.
